It's probably pretty obvious by now, I'm trying to learn as much as I can about my new ride.
What feeds the volt meter? I still want my gauge to work - I'm told when I replace my 6 volt generator with the new look alike 6 volt alternator I tape off existing wires. Curious what feeds the volt meter. Thanks |

Here's a 39 Ford wiring diagram
You have top click on the link in one of the threads. It will show the Van Pelt diagram. Notice the 39 uses an AMP METER. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showth...wiring+diagram Posting # 2 in the thread below has the link for the 1940 Ford wiring diagram. It is a volt meter. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showth...wiring+diagram Last edited by 19Fordy; 06-19-2014 at 07:38 AM. |

Maybe Standard uses amp - I have 39 deluxe with two wires on gauge so pretty sure its a volt meter

You are correct. I recall this was discussed in earlier discussions a while ago.

The 39 volt meter measures the average battery voltage and does not show rapid changes like a regular volt meter. The connection from the alternator to the battery will provide the voltage to the gauge. I left the voltage regulator on my 39 after I put the alternator on. If I recall I moved the arm wire over with the battery connection on the regulator and taped the field wire off at the generator end. The arm wire provides voltage to the alternator. I have a single wire alternator. My 6 volt alternator is in a Ford generator shell so it still looks stock. G.M.

When I converted to 12V I did the same thing as GM on my 40 as shown below.
On my 40 DeLuxe I also ran a jumper wire between the 2 terminals of the circuit breaker that is under the dash. It's the wire with the blue connectors shown below. Then I ran an 8 gage wire with a fusible link from the terminal of the one wire alternator to the negative side of the solinoid where the battery is also attached. My car is 12 volts, negative ground. Last edited by 19Fordy; 06-19-2014 at 10:10 AM. |

The large wire is the arm and the small the field. G.M.

Check and see if you have voltage to the gauge. G.M.
