Default Which head to use

I have a relatively stock engine in my '30 coupe except for a downdraft carb and header. The rods have been checked recently and are within spec. The head is starting to seep at #3 cyl so i thought I might get a higher comp head while removing the original anyway. Unfortunatly I wanted the Brumfield but found no longer produced. So with the Snyder which one would be preferred, the 5.5 or 6.0? Also do Henry's original studs really need to be changed and which gasket can used with this head, copper or composite. Any input will be appreciated. Thanks ...Greg

Both of Snyder's heads are a worthwhile update. I have been using the 5.5 and have been very pleased. I also installed their new studs and the new style gaskets.

I have had Snyder's 5.5 head for almost 8 years, and have been completely satisfied with it. A very worthwhile addition to a Model A..... you will love it!

I like my 5.5 Snyder head, but I always use a copper head gasket sprayed with lots of Copper Coat

Either head will be good.... Here's my take on the studs. Before you order any, try to remove the old ones. If they all come out, put the new stronger ones in. If some are stubborn, leave them. It'll be a bitch if you break one off. I think original studs could definetly handle the 5.5 or 6.0 head. You just have to be sure to retorque your head a few times. Maybe 1 or 2 more retorques than with the grade 8 studs.

Logan; kinda how i was thinking along the studs line, Ford used good steel. Seems like they wouldn't stretch much more, and yes if they break you'in trouble. Thanks for the input. Greg

Suggest you check for flatness before installation ,even if it is a new head.

A friend just threw a Brumfield away after trying to save it. There is a reason they are no longer produced. He installed the Snyder 6.0 head; blew two premium head gaskets; took the head to the machine shop and .007 was removed to make it flat; these heads should be surfaced before installing them. This I believe is what happens when we try to "improve" the Model A.
