Default Rope gasket

Do you still have to soak the "rope" gasket that fits in the timing cover? Sometimes they change the composition of gaskets in general and thus the install changes.

I never soak the rope seal. Just install it and use a socket to tap it to shape, then give it a good coat of grease and assemble it. Make sure the surface on the pulley is polished very smooth.

One more thing.
Does the cam thrust spring get grease?

Yes, be sure and grease the spring or it will make a racket.

That looks right. I form the rope seal to shape by tapping a socket the same size as the pulley sleeve into the rope, then grease the rope and tap the ends into the slot so they just barely stick above the gasket surface. A touch of sealer between the rope ends and gasket, and be sure to grease the spring and plunger face and sides.

That's usually what mine look like, and as the pan gets pulled up into position the rope seal gets compressed and squished into a proper attitude. I know what you're saying, though; on the face of it it isn't quite there yet. I used to trim my rope gaskets, but now I soak 'em in oil, install them full length, put a dab of sealer on the ends, and let them compress.

Not to take anything away from you, Vince; you know more than I'll ever know about the Model A. But this method works for me.

I keep my rope gaskets in a jar of oil.
