Default Gas Additive by Les Pearson

Les Pearson, author of many Model A Books and reference manuals, is promoting a line of products called Pro-Ma Performance Products. This includes a gas additive, PT5 Plus Petro Treatment and also an oil additive called MLB Concentrated Oil Additive. The products can be viewed at web site promaperformance.co.nz/lespearson and they are also sold and distributed out of Canada. I inquired at web site and they sent me contact phone numbers to place an order from Canada. The only distributor so far in US is located in Texas. Has anyone tried the gas additive? Or the oil additive? And if so, do you agree with claims and benefits stated by Les? Thanks, Taylor Seward

Just remember he is getting paid to do it.

I just don't get additives.....

The only one I will use is Stabil for storing gasoline.

But I have put 150K + on all my vehicles (all ran well, none burned oil), with no additives. Why use one?? If your oil is rated for the application, then that is about it (well ok.. I do want to make sure I have sufficient zinc with flat tappets and strong springs). Why does gas need an additive - (unless you are adding lead or octane booster)?

Maybe I am missing something.....

What's with those "additives" are they just snake oil for the car or is there 3rd party scientific evidence toward the claims? I know it's a big industry, well so are mediums.

I dunno either, ....but I do know that Lucas sponsors almost every form of motorsports in some way, --and they even own a Stadium in Indianapolis.

My thought would be that if someone buys a bottle of Lucas 'something' yet it does not make a difference, then they likely won't buy it again however they evidently have sold enough Lucas Oil Products that Forrest bought him a Television Network with the profits!! Welcome to MAV TV!!

stouchton, I believe gas additives like this and MMO are necessary for certain gas formulas sold in some geographical locations, or for certain times of the year.

People report that their gas gums up or doesn't perform well without additives. I've never experience this myself, but too many people report the issue to not believe it.

Maybe I'm just lucky to get "good" gas where I live. I've kept gas in jugs for years and it performs just fine. But I've heard that isn't true in other locales.

I have had gasoline problems with my 3 antique cars in the past. During our operating season of late April (salt washed away by spring rains) to sometime in December (salt back due to snow) I use the blue Stabil in all 3 cars as I can't run each one all the time. I also use MMO in the T and A but not the Healey. But, come Fall when I can't tell when the snow is coming and I'll have to quit, I add aviation gas to all 3 cars to get rid of the ethanol containing regular gas. This is the best cure short of draining each system. It also gives me a reservoir of fuel available for my generator against the winter ice storms. All my power equipment gets the Av gas treatment. Problems solved.

As with anything you have try it and see based on research. By the same token I'd be surprised if with the reputation Les has that he would put his name to something that wasn't of a good quality?

Bear in mind the only real difference between brands of fuel is the additive package. I visit the States but don't buy enough tanks of Gas to differentiate between the various brands. I can however say based on UK experience that for both Petrol and Diesel I've found a difference between brands. So depending on where you are and what you want, plus what the additive says it does mean you can make an educated decision.

If it doesn't do it for you, it's a one time purchase

Gas additives remind me of the Turbo Atomizers that could be placed under the carb of cars and trucks in the 70's.
Their swirling action was enough to make a sane man dizzy but they claimed a 10-20% increase in gas mileage.
We put one on a tow vehicle but kept forgetting to calculate the mileage because we were too busy trying to make a NASCAR Modified go fast.

Like many I use Stabil in the mower and T over the winter and snow blower in the summer.

I also like MMO because I like the Mystery of using something I that is a mystery and I like the smell but don't drink it. It is usually used to protect the surfaces of the old cars (T and A) because it soaks into the surface rust and slows down more oxidation.

I never used fuel additives either, for over 20 years. But now after recently experiencing a stuck valve I'm using the recommended MMO added to the fuel.
Who knows what's in the fuels these days.
And I try to never used Ethanol gas. I say "try" because without testing a sample from each tank how do you know for sure the "No Ethanol" sign is valid at the station.

The only luck I've had with gas additives is Heet (de-icer) and Seafoam no doubt about that stuff for small engines, it eats away the gunk and varnish and soon your engine is purring. As far as the other stuff: transmission fluid, engine oil, anti-freeze additives...I think it's all snake oil. I know some people who use a lot of them, I guess as long as they "believe" it works it does. "Maybe" there are (engines) out there with a verified 700,000 miles or so on them with little wear that can prove it, not these short term tests I have seen?

Buying anything that sends profits out of the country in which it was purchased contributes to the national trade deficit and degradation of your own standard of living.

There's plenty of snake oil (some actually OK) available from US based corporations. Is imported actually better? Don't know. Yes, I'd buy Les Peterson books, no other equivalent. But snake oil, I'll stick to home brew.
