windshield installation of 46/68
I've just had the windshield installed in my car but the division bar (new Drake repro) seems to be too wide for the space. The chrome strips appear to be to long as they butt up to each other at the centre "v" and nearly want to overlap. They don't appear to want to seat properly in their groove at the ends. I don't imagine the windshield has shrunk or the chrome has "grown" while it has been out for the past 3 decades.
I have been told they are bear to get in. Is there any "secret" to installing the chrome that anyone may know of? Should I remove the chrome and grind a bit off each end to help? I have used a Carpenter seal. The corners seem to fit well with no puckering up on the outside or inside. Any advise will be appreciated. thanks GB

OK perhaps I will phrase the problem another way.
Does the chrome go into the rubber seal before or after the windshield glass is set? Thanks GB

I think it goes in the rubber before the glass is set in the body.

Just done one. Install the glass first. using lots of soap and water tap outside trim into grooves in rubber with mallet until fully seated. Should give enough room for center strips. If not tap a little harder. Should work.

Re: windshield installation of 46/68
This reply may be a little late, but might help others.
I've done a few windshield/seals in the past on "other" cars with the imbedded SS trim. Tri-five Chevys must have the trim inserted before installing to the pinchweld. Time to do it for the 47 sedan. Searched internet for assistance, but with little results. Purchased the Steele seal ($$ more than others) and whoa... in the box is instructions. Probably would have attempted it and either broke the glass or destroyed the Reveal Molding. I've done many things twice in the past, just my thing.... Attached is a link to the instructions. http://jimboehly.com/Windshield_replace.pdf |

Re: windshield installation of 46/68
Thanks to everyone that replied to my thread. I have the glass in and the divider bar fits well. It took a bit of perseverance. I had to use an angle grinder and grind a "knats whisker" off the end of the stainless moldings so they would butt up at the centre and not overlap then I installed the centre bar between the stainless pushing them out into the rubber grooves. Needed the help of a friend to push down on the bar at the same time so I could get the first screw started from inside. Yes there is a certain satisfaction when you overcome a problem that has caused you to stay awake a night thinking about a solution.
