Although never a gas tank... I have used a product called metal rescue to take rust off of metal. It works well, but isn't the cheapest. I had to try it. Only had to let the pieces soak for a day and they were clean of rust. It will not hurt brass bushings and other components that are not steel. I'm not sure how it would work in a gas tank but I bet it would probably work very well. If the price was better then it would be a great solution.
Next I want to try/test a molasses bath. Do a search it looks like it works very well for rust and is quite cheap. The only draw back is that it takes a while to work. Weeks and if you leave it in too long it can damage the good metal. I wonder if anyone has tried electrolysis in a gas tank? http://www.myfordtractors.com/electrolysis.shtml Last edited by Tinker; 11-02-2013 at 04:58 PM. Reason: Sp and added text |

Did a search on electrolysis on Fordbarn and found this post from Tom Cavallaro in Nov 2011:
"This is how I cleaned my gas tank without removing it from the car! It worked better than any other process I tried, and I tried quite a few for over 3 months, but the electrolysis worked in one day." |

What's to keep the tank from rusting again after you use this quick fix ?
I have used Eastwoods gas tank etch cleaner/sealer kit successfully in three tanks but you must follow the directions to the letter to get the results they advertise. Last tank I did was 14 years ago and it is still rust free. http://www.eastwood.com/gas-tank-sealer-kits.html Last edited by Mikeinnj; 11-02-2013 at 06:20 PM. Reason: Ad link |

Breathe hard on an electrolytically prepared surface and the moisture from your breath will be enough to start the downhill slide. I use Kleen-Strip "Prep & Etch" (available at the orange place) which is phosphoric acid and which etches and preps the surface - and leaves a phosphoric dip coating to slow down the rust attack. Painting or coating is still recommended within a couple of days, however. Joe K
