Can anyone tell me what this number means? It's stamped on the subrail on my 28 ford sport coupe.

The BO stands for the Buffalo, NY Ford Assembly Plant.
The 14610 means that it was the 14,610 body which was produced or assembled at the Buffalo Assembly Plant. During 1928, there were a total of 17970 bodies, including truck and commercial chassis, produced at the Buffalo Assembly Plant. Courious...what is the gas tank date on the firewall of the gas tank assembly? Pluck |

Pluck, that is actually a RO, there is no date stamp on the gas tank and no serial number on the frame. The engine serial# is 62,XXX. March 28' it has all the funny AR stuff.

The only assembly plant that had a "R" at the beginning was the Richmond, California Assembly Plant.
That plant opened on August 1, 1931...It replaced the San Francisco Assembly Plant. Look very closely at the lower part of the "B" or "R" as you call it...is there not a faint sign of a line at the bottom? Your call...I still think it is a "BO" for Buffalo. I will side with you on that one then. I guess they just didn't get a good square strike on the stamp. Thanks. Or the info.

I wish I knew...but there may be some "key" features to determine a early 1928 body from a late 1928 body but I do not know what those features would be when studing the body only. However if there is no date on the tank that could possibably mean early 1928 but not always. Does it have a left hand e-brake? If not, then is there a "patch" on the lower cowl section which is blocking the hole for the left e-brake? The change from left hand e-brake to center e-brake (according to the JS) was between April and June 1928. Pluck Last edited by Steve Plucker; 09-02-2013 at 10:47 PM. |

It looks like ''BO'' to me ; just not distinct in the B stamping.
The topic of early ''BO; CO & DO'' stamped Coupe bodies was discussed recently. It is looking like Detroit [ Fordson Plant in 1928] was using these letters to distinguish between Sport, Business & Standard Coupe stampings. Canada initially used these bodies until producing them at Ontario. There are a couple of them here in NZ ; CO 04206 is a Biz. Coupe that I know of. All early '28. |
