Default 1928 Starter Switch is a bit different

Has anyone seen a switch just like this? With such a short rod cover, I'm guessing it has no rod return spring other than the contact bronze.

I wonder if it was a Western Auto or some such aftermarket part?

I have a couple of them too and I agree with Tom. They must be an aftermarket item.

I also noticed it....I think it's just the top outer sleeve that's wrong. The
inner part and base look OK...it's how the inner is sweged(SP) to the square
part. Do you see what I'm saying?

Yes, I noticed that when I was there for the opening. I was wondering if it wasn't just a repro?
Or maybe it's an original without the extra return spring on the sleeve?

Someone needs to check it out at the Benson Ford Research Center.

Here it is in pieces, I hope.. Sorry about that, It just did not look right with NO SPRING !!.. Out to garage & found two more, NOS, & now its shown in Picture #2 with the spring.. The other spring has got to be out on the shelf because I took it apart to get it plated..

I noticed the switch in the picture of the museum too and it is like the one that was on eBay. It looks, maybe me, that the overall shaft length is longer on the switches with the short cover than the ones with the long cover.

Steve, I just checked both kind, NOS & they are the same size.. In fact you can switch them from one to the other..

It is for sure that picture does not lie. If you notice it has no emergency brake provision on the transmission cover, which indicates the engine was either a very early, or in actuality was number 1 on the water brake. The sleeve on the switch was of two designs. First was indexed with a guide slot to hold the offset starter rod in the correct position. The second design did not have a guide slot, as it incorporated a straight shaft starter rod. The picture really throws a curve into the design of the switch casing for the early vehicles ??
