Default V-Belt help for my '46 Ford Truck

Hello All,

I was wondering if someone had the same problem I am having with replacing the belts on their 1946 Ford Pick-up. I have the flat 6 (G) which has the two v-belts. in the green parts book it says the part numbers are:

2GA-8620-A (Gen)
2GT-8620-A (Fan)

I have tried everywhere to find replacement belts, but the ones that I have found are not tight enough, and the fan belt keeps chirping. I called Mac's and they told me to try a tractor supply place they sould have the size's I need. Does anyone know the correct size of belts I will need. I believe the gen. belt is 34 1/8" belt, but I am not sure. I have no idea what the correct size of belt I need for the fan belt.

Any help I would be very grateful!

Regards,
Jeff

2GA-8620-A is 22.49, 2GT-8620-A is 31.97, according to fanbelt chart in Service Bulletins. I think that would make designations above backwards, judging from pictures in G overhaul book.

You would happen to know the art numbers for the belts you purchased from Gates industrial distributor? Thanks!

My local NAPA store, which also has a lot of tractor and agricultural machinery parts, was able to provide the right section belt in numerous lengths. You might try there.

I contacted a Gates industrial distributor and their sizes are not jiving with the sizes above. I am not sure what to do? The smallest "B" belt which is 31" x 21/32". Which I can use for the gen belt, but I cannot find the correct size for the fan belt.

Jr - I sent you an email with the Gates belts I had used. Cog style. Let me know if you did not receive.

Jeff, The green book shows 2GT-8620-A for the generator and 2GT-8577-A
for the water pump. 2GT-8620-A crosses to NAPA 25-28346 or Gates TR28346.
Can't find a cross for 2GT-8577-A.

As I have found the belt lengths, that are sold at auto parts places, do not increase or decrease in small amounts. What I have done is to go to the next size down in belt width then see what lengths are available. That may allow you to get a belt that is maybe a half inch shorter than the one you have now. I think I went to a 11/16 width belt when I added an alternator and needed a slightly longer belt.

Auto parts stores used to ALL have size charts, I'm used to Gates- they had very good ones... Recent experience, Kragen was able to go by size... The sales guy you find may not know what a size chart is... Karl

I had the same problem for a long time on my 46 1-1/2 ton. Dual matched belts. I couldn't get matches anywhere, and I tried the tractor stores. I finally found a guy in New Jersey who specialized in parts for 1 ton and over trucks. I'm sure the belts are the same though.

The business was "Half Ton Fun". They should have what you're looking for. (732) 928-9421

Remember when you are making your belt adjustment that the generator moves on two axis. Up and down to get the pulleys the right distance apart to take up both belts slack as well as a pivot outward for applying tension.

Go to NAPA. The belt book has all the belts listed by Top Width and then by Length. Ask the counterman to interchange the Ford numbers and then see what they translate to. The belt book has an interchange or the computor also has an interchange. I just interchanged 2 belts for a tractor I was working on, and they fit fine.

V Belt Supply http://www.vbeltsupply.com/ has a large selection at very good prices.

The people I have talked to have been very helpful.

Give them a call and tell them what you are trying to do. They will probably come up with the proper belts.

That said, when one of the fan belts broke on my COE, I got a replacement at my local NAPA store. Just took the broken one in.
