I don't know why the plugs have more threads but, you don't have to worry about them hitting the piston. The plug hole is offset from the piston. If you look in the plug hole you will see it won't hit.

The old plugs may have had too few threads, then the exposed threads in the head would get loaded with carbon, which would make the new plugs hard to thread in all the way. Use a hacksaw to cut notches into an old spark plug threads and this will make a good thread cleaner. The old plug of course would have to have the full length thread.

Just a newer style. Nothing wrong, you bought the same ones I use to run your engine on the stand.

I like the taller ones too. The copper tabs from the distributor fit better and you can get small brass sleeves for the top from Restoration Supply that almost make them look vintage ( except for that chrome base)

Want to lose the cadmium finish. brush the bright area with a course steel brush or 150 grade paper. Clean 'em with lacquer thinner, then brush gun blue on the metal base. Voilą, pre 1956 Champions.

It is difficult to tell thread length from the pictures. Count the treads and see if there is a difference.
