Default Multiple disc clutch

I have a MD clutch apart and need to replace 2 discs that are worn badly. I have read that I need a KR Wilson tool to get the clutch back together properly. First of all, does anyone reline these discs? Secondly, where do I find the KR Wilson tool?

The individual disks can be re-lined by any clutch repair facility. The disks are much the same as a motorcycle clutch. A KRW alignment tool would be hard to come by, but you can fabricate a substitute using a board and some nails.

For more information about the multi-disk clutch go to the web site of the Santa Anita A's of Arcadia, CA at santaanitaas.org. On the home page put your cursor on "Technical Reference". My name will appear below, click on it. A library page will come up. There is an article there about the restoration of the multi-clutch.

This web site is not locked, you will be able to download and print out any of the articles. Feel free to do so as they are there for the benefit of the Model A hobby and anyone may use them.

Unless you have a neurosurgeon/facial reconstructive surgeon as a neighbor and a double platinum level ACA card, I recommend you NOT use a homemade rig to work on this part. I don’t know the exact amount of ‘spring’ in the spring, but I am comfortable it would easily disfigure a guy if it got loose!!! At this late stage in life, I have finally learned that things go better with the 'right tool'.

I would be willing to loan you my KRW tool for a short period. However, due to it's scarcity ($) I would request you cover postage (insured) and a 'security deposit' which i would return when i have the tool back in the same shape it came to you.

If interested, we can chat via the private message to the left of the page.

Fortunately, my discs were all in good shape and only needed cleaning before reassembly so I cannot guide you on where to have yours resurfaced. Surely another FB’r can guide you.

Thank you for your quick reply. I might take you up on borrowing that tool, however, I'm going on vacation for about 3 weeks, so can I contact you when I return?
Thanks,
Ted Burson

I disassembled and reassembled mine using a large stainless steel hose clamp, and 4 pieces of 1/4 diameter round bar. I have a photo here somewhere, just have to find it. clamb goes horizontal around clutch, round bar goes vertical between the teeth and clamp to keep it aligned. put under hydraulic press to put pressure on spring and remove 4 nuts. very easy.

Charles Reese is right....that spring on the multi disc clutch is one of Ford's killer springs ! Best to use the right tool to be safe !

If you don't have the proper KRW tool you can get it apart and reassemble using a shop press.

If you are careful you can re-assemble the clutch after you have the discs relined. Make sure that all the fingers are lined up. I did my own multi-disc clutch several years ago in my garage with only a limited amount of tools.

Brian NJ, I thought someone would have a home-made tool that might work. thanks for the info. One question, I took two mdclutches apart. One had lock washers and one not. Do you know which is correct?

Well,...I have an NOS spring for the mutil-disc clutch. I had to push it in my
spring checker,....with a 1" press it has a spring rate of 140 pounds per inch.
If someone knows the "installed height", we will all know the installed pressure.

I'm not familiar with the MD clutch but the parts
book shows five lock washers.

I believe Ford bragged about it being 397Lbs of pressure in either the early Owners Manuals or Service Bulletins.
