Default Radiator Shell Upper insert Removal

I have a 31 radiator shell that I need to remove the upper insert for repaint. Any tips on bending the tabs to remove the shell?
I also have a new emblem. Should I put the emblem in the insert before putting insert back in shell?

just got done doing one of those....I left the insert in and taped it off and painted it in the shell....removed the emblem and polished and painted it black and wiped the over spray off the emblem with a rag dipped in laq. thinner. come out mice. I dont know why you would want to use a repo over the orig? The reason I did not take insert out is because the tabes tend to break off and all of these were still there so I decided to save them the way they were. you may want to polish the shell befor you paint it. That is up to you.....good luck Denny in Jackson mich

As sharply as the tabs are bent, I would use heat if you absolutley have to bent them open.

My old emblem was destroyed in the garage fire, so I didn't have one to save. I like the idea of leaving the insert in and masking off.

I had two tabs break off when reinstalling the restored insert in a 31 shell. Thought I was home free when none broke taking it out. Be careful when removing the emblem. Some of the inserts have several tiny spot welds holding the emblem in the insert. I think that I would paint the insert IN the shell and not remove it if I had it to do over.
