Default Bolt Thread Sealant

At store, looking for a sealant to put on aging bolt threads that may be prone to leaking (i.e. bolts at steering box, banjo, etc). Given my mechanical prowess, I don’t want the type that permanently locks bolt in place! I see at least 2 varieties … Loctite RTV red & Silicone RTV Blue … am seeking advice on best choice for my use … thanks! (am open to other brands if applicable)

I think if Red Green didn't have duct tape for his all purpose fixer, his next choice might be silicone as his all purpose sealer.

I use the white I think Teflon based that Mitch shows in the photo for water related bolts and never-seize for engine and manifold bolts that are subject to a lot of heat

Permatex makes several excellent thread sealants that ease assembly and disassembly, yet seal out water, oil, fuel. Some are heat resistant to 400 degrees, great for manifold studs. You might have to order them. I got some through Amazon

Permatex makes a thread sealant that is anerobic and sets up in the absence of air. I really think it is the "be all end all" for sealing studs. There is another product that has shown up around here due to the oil boom. It seals any threads that are near gas or oil. It is called Gasoila and it is insoluable in gasoline or oil.

I've used loctite 567 or permatex No3 non hardening sealant with good success.

Charles, I use Loctite blue. Red is for things that should never be removed. Blue on things like the pan bolts etc.

Before using any of these products clean the bolt and the hole with lacquer thinner or other solvent to get the surfaces clean and then apply the product or the material will not stop the leak.
