Default 40 Ford trunk lock

what position is the key (horizontal or vertical) when the tunk is locked?

Mine is vertical but the key has to be in the vertical position to remove the key.

Mine too. Vertical when locked, key pin slots facing up. Rotate key so key slots are facing down to unlock. And key cannot be removed when in the unlocked position.

But mine is a reproduction lock handle. A Bob Drake product, I think. Not sure if original functioned this way.

If you don't have a key, could be a big problem. Suggest removing the glove box cylinder to look for a code number. If either cylinder has been replaced, that won't help. Then you are faced with crawling into the trunk from the back seat. Ugh!
