Sounds like time for a HeliCoil or, generically, a stud thread repair kit. You can get 'em from most of the "A" suppliers or from your local auto parts store. Buy peace of mind for less than $30 ... plus you can truthfull say that you fixed it.

I agree with Bruce, Fix it! When faced with the same problem and the engine is in the car, I use a head to center and align the drill for the Helicoil. The size of the drill used for a 7/16" helicoil is a good fit in a head and provides for precise location and alignment. Having the head in place also keeps the drill cuttings from finding their way into the cylinders. I use a cracked original head for this purpose but you could use your good head. Make sure you place a stop or some tape on your drill bit when doing this to eliminate the possibility of drilling to deep. Measure a good clean stud hole with the head on and transfer the depth to your drill bit. Use the top of the head and the tape as your visual guides for depth.

Richard.... One of the KEYS to a good helicoil job is a good or new drill bit, that drills ON SIZE. Old worn drill bits cut over size! Please do a test piece, so your satisfied. The same for the helicoil kit, if the tap is worn you can buy a new tap without buying the set. Dudley

I think Brattons supplies head studs with the next size thread on the block side. Check their catalog, if that's the case you can tap the next size thread in the block.
