When using the 8BA truck bell housing with the large round bolt circle for the transmission does it matter weather or not if you use the stamped steel Mercury bell housing as long as you use the correct starter plate ? I don’t work on very many 8BA engines. Thanks

The starter plate from the Mercury will fit the cast truck housing the difference being the truck is recessed for the dicast seal that bolts on the last two oil pan bolts. If you don't use the seal it will fit fine.

So, to go the other way using the Mercury bell housing I can use the truck starter plate and use the seal . I have both starter plates but only have a Mercury bell housing.

Ken I have never tried that combination but I see no reason it shouldn't work.

using the stamp steel passenger bell housing you can bore the register to fit the T-170 trans and weld on some ears and have the best transmission ever made.

The T-170 is a Tremac 4 speed trans. 4th is overdrive. Mid to late 80s F150. 3 different OD ratios. Get one from a V8. Top Load Shifter comes out approximately 2" from an original 3 speed. Lots of posts on Ford Barn. Got one in my Avatar 35 Roadster.
