Default Yes, another waterpump problem.

The little lady is leaking coolant very badly. It's so bad , it shorts out the spark plugs. So today, I replaced the two metallic rope seals and tightened it up. It is still leaking with out the engine running no matter how tight I turn it. I did clean the shaft and it is in good shape. Did I miss something? I did a search and watched youtubes. Just wondering what to do now. Should I just buy a no-leak ?

Thanks
Mick

Are you using water pump grease as well as packing? Is it coming out around the shaft or leaking somewhere else?

May need to pull the pump and check for a crack in the casting.

You must have a good shaft and bushing, remove all old packing and install 2 lead packing rings with grease smeared on them. I did that and my pump never leaked a drop in 15 years. And I only lightly snugged the brass collar a few times.

Yea, without a smooth shaft, a good fit in the bushing, little horizontal in and out of the block, most of the old packing removed, you will have leaks.

There is no need to get another complete pump if the casting is good. Like Bob states if the casting is cracked it will leak. With a good casting you can get all the parts you need to rebuild the one you have including a "leakless bearing and nut.

I missed the grease part. I watched the YT videos and there is not a real good one. I cleaned the shaft and it looks very good. I will check and see if there is a crack. I just wrapped the lead string around the shaft and started turning the cap.

Will try again, thanks all..

EVERYONE should have a Leakless, Greaseless, Ball Bearing water pump!
They look completely ORIGINAL. The original was a weak design & needs all the help you can give it!

String makes it sounds like graphite string used for faucets. For rotating shafts, like the water pump, you want either the lead packing rings (2), or the split lead packing rings, and be sure they are packed with grease.

The very first pump I did always had a slow drip no matter how tight I made the packing nut. After adding grease it never leaked a drop and the packing nut only needs to be slightly snugged.

A new leakless pump and cast aluminum fan is the way to go

How long do the "leakless " ones stay leakless?

This is the type of water pump you should have.

Buy the leakiest and get back to enjoying the car. I have only ever heard of one person having a problem and Snyders replaced it. Wayne

I feel that some LEAKLESS pump failures "might" be caused by using HARSH Radiator Cleaners???

If you go leak less, you better buy two of them, because when they start leaking on a trip, the fix is to replace it.

This is what I put in. The packing I took out was lead also. For the price of a leakless, I might just go that way. I have a couple of months to iron it out.

That's all I have ever used with a little Teflon grease for good measure.
