Default Measuring water temp

What location do you guys measure water temperature? I have an infrared thermometer. What's the best place to get a good reading and what should it be reading?

If everything is working properly Bob is right
But if the motor has clogged water jacket or accumulated rust you need to check all over
The pump and basic layout leaves a couple places of concern
I would check around the cylinders 3and 4 it seems to be an area that rust accumulates

I'm not a particularly big fan of the infrared thermometers.
I use a dial meat thermometer placed directly into the coolant at the top of the radiator.

I use both. However, I use the thermometer in the top of the radiator and am the most comfortable with my data that way. In fact I have a for real radiator thermometer I bought just for radiator temps.

FYI, I have a temp gage on my car, and the water neck I bought from Snyders has a port in it for my temp gage sensor to be mounted in.

Speaking of clogged water jackets, I have a friend who just changed engines because mice had built nests in the water jackets. When he took the cylinder head off, he found pieces of wood in water passage holes in the block deck. Apparently the mice were building a wood frame house in the engine.

Bob,

out here, we get acorns and juniper berries

the rumor is the berries add 1-2 HP.
