Another Steering Box Question
I'm attempting to rebuild an old Ford - actually, an F-1 pickup - steering box. I need to replace the roller on the sector arm. How does one get the roller pin out? I've tried drilling and the pin is so hard that I don't have a bit that will touch it. I've taken the part to a couple of garages locally, including one that does a lot of flathead Ford stuff. So far, this has everyone stumped who has tried to remove it. What are we doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

Re: Another Steering Box Question
I use a carbide bur and carefully grind one end of the pin off, then drive out with a punch.
FYI, the thrust washers supplied with the new roller are too thick. You might luck out and be able to use the original washers, but I have extras ground in .001" graduations so I can set the roller clearance at .001-.002". Hopefully that helps. Let me know if you need any more info. Neal Last edited by NealinCA; 02-26-2016 at 03:42 PM. |
