Default Test a 1936 electric gas gauge

How do I test a 1936 electric gas gauge? I have a 12 volt system with a 12 volt to 6 volt reducer.
Can I easily test it with out installing it

Sounds like the gauge is still 6 volts -- get a 6 volt latern battery and some wires with clips. Now the gauge is only 1/2 of the equasion. How about the in tank sender?

Do not leave the battery attached to the gauge without running the test through the sender.

Bruce, wouldn't he get the same results by simply grounding the gauge to sender wire? With care, momentary grounding only to see the gauge's movement toward the full mark.

Alan, that what I was saying -- I just used more words.
And cautioning to use 6 volts and not the 12 volt set up that he now was using.
