I am working on a G series 6 cylinder transmission and the case is bad in the thrust area. This is a top loader case - not a side loader. These seem more rare than a LZ transmission! Looking for leads on a replacement case or even a complete transmission for sale.
Thanks, Will Kimble |

The G-series 6 used the same basic transmission as the V8 but gearing may have been different. The top shift case for the light duty pickups from 1937 though at least 1951 are all compatible. The G engine had it's own half bell that is unique to that block. The 9N and V8 60 transmissions were the odd balls in that time frame. The-78 case could be used with early or late gears. That casting number is on the lower rear part of the casting.

I agree with Rotorwrench, the bolt pattern on the back side of the 6cyl half bell is the same as v8's back to 32. Should be easy to find a 78 case...37 and up I believe

I've not seen many G-series so no surprise being wrong on that one. The G series of engines ran from 1941 through 1947 when the H-series came on line. They were used in cars and lighter trucks in that time frame. Ford made a lot of them for the war-time but they had a differnt transmission in the G8T trucks. Look for an old ragged out jail bar pickup or keep scouring the flea-pay and other sites.
Sorry to get the OP's hopes up but they are still out there. Maybe someone else knows of one. A good machinist may be able to repair an old one with wear on the back inner thrust face. It could be brazed up and machined with a special counter bore but it might be expensive. Last edited by rotorwrench; 12-20-2024 at 08:46 PM. |

FYI, Will is Mac VanPelts right hand man, SO he, in affect, is like E F Hutton when it comes to transmissions for the V8 era.....when he talks he knows of what he speaks!!!! YOU are spot on with the "military" crowd....WILL, IF you read this you might try the MVPA and see IF they have a SWAP meet area, "maybe" one out of a GTB or a Greyhound (I think Ford did a greyhound?), I don;t believe the T16 ever used a 6, only the V8 SO......?? OR any WWII surplus sites/vendors. |
