Default Waterpump Play

How much play is too much for the waterpump shaft? Mine moves up to 1/4" in and out. I think the packing needs to be replaced and I have no problem doing that, but if the play is excessive I'm wondering about going to a new leakless one.

Thoughts?

Or install a thrust collar and repack your old one. I have no issues with the graphite packing. I like to keep it simple.https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/p...9255&cat=41793

My recollection is that the spec is 0.010" from the back of the shaft to the head, and 0.005" fore-and-aft play in the shaft. 1/4" does sound excessive. There are collars you can attach to the shaft in front of the front bearing, underneath the fan, to limit the fore-and-aft play. I've used these with success. If you do decide to get a new one the leakless bushings are far preferable to the leaky (original) style, IMHO.

Edit - YB beat me to it!
