Default Drums wont fit

Hey all,

So the brake linings on my 30 Tudor were in need of being replaced, which is no surprise because the car hadn't been driven since 1956. So, I did just that; I replaced the linings only. Yes, I know it would probably be wise to re-do the mechanical aspects, but everything checked out fine and the only weak link was the linings. I replaced the linings on the front of the car and went to put the drums back on, and now they will not fit. I have the adjustment wedge closed all the way on both sides, but I still cant get the drum on either side.

It looks like everything is lined up and functioning...

thoughts?

The linings come in two thicknesses. One for drums with little wear. The ones for well worn drums are thicker. My guess is that you have the thicker ones.

You do realize the really worn out brakes can appear to be right.
You know that the brakes work on thousands clearances, did you measure stuff to thousands? Lets put it in perspective- a few hairs difference in the profile of the wedges can cause uneven braking side to side.

There is no such thing as just replacing the linings and expecting them to work. If you want working brakes you need to do all the work.

You must make the shoes be the same diameter as the drums and they must be centered. Do all the pins fit snug? They should. Did you make sure the adjuster link slots fit snug?
Are you sure the wedges and cams are not unevenly worn? Just a few thou of wear difference can make a big difference in how they apply.

What about the drums? Did you measure them? Are they within safe limits?

There is reason why so many people thing mechanical brakes are not very good. It is because they are not properly rebuilt. Good brakes on the A are not quick, easy or cheap to make happen.
