Pull draw - push pump

Hi Guys

Dumb question, but I'm old and not that strong

I have one of those pumps which is suppose to make it easier to add tranny and rear gear oil. Think its called a suck and push pump. Anyway, I find it extremely hard to suck/pull oil out of container into pump. My question is, can I remove the top of the pump and pour oil into it and then just push it into tranny or rear?

Not sure what pump you have, is it the one that looks similar to a grease gun? I have one of those but haven't used it yet, but hopefully will be handy to empty the vessels that holds those canister filters, as well as filling the transmission and rear end.
Now I have something similar, a huge syringe, that I use from time to time to administer meds to my horses. They can be very tough as well. What I do is take the unit apart and put a very thin film of vegetable oil on the rubber sealing bung and it works great! Maybe a little gear oil on the rubber bung of your oiler would make it much easier.

Yes mine looks like a huge blue syringe. It has a long clear tube on one end. It's very difficult to pull/suck oil from container into the tool. I also thought, if I could open and pour oil in, be much easier and I then would be able to measure amount I want in.

Those types are generally meant to transfer fluids like gasoline or kerosene not heavy weight oils.

I found that warming oil first helps a lot.

Why not try an experiment with a couple of clean containers? See if you can fill it and then "push" the contents into a container to test it out. Much easier to try it out on a bench than under the car!

I wonder if you could clean out an empty manual grease gun cartridge, fill it with transmission fluid and then pump it into the transmission? Use a flexible hose with the grease fitting tip removed or cut off. Bet it would work.

Well, you might be right! I'm going to try and use my steel oil extractor and see if it works. I just got it. I bought one from Princess Auto... a power fist unit.... some time ago, made who knows where, and it busted the first time I tried to use it. Remember "you get what you pay for!"

Maybe you could try a large oil can if you can find one. I have used them to put oil into small fill holes and for similar situations but not with transmission oil.

Maybe use a dish soap squeeze bottle and shoot it into the intake hole.

I have on that looks like a grease gun that I unscrew the end fill it and then push the fluid. You can not suck gear with it but it will push it.
