Default 1936 ford pickup steering box question....

can someone direct me to back posts, I had seen some posts some time back about changing out the steering box in a '36 Ford pickup to '37 or later for better steering and handling.

I understood this to mean that when you let go of the steering wheel, the '37 steering box would have a tendancy to want to return the steering wheel back to "neutral position" for better handling and steering than what was on the original '36 steering.

Is this correct.

I am ready to do this now and wanted to refresyh my memory on what years (I think '37 and up to ????) to where I can use my existing column, rod and change out the gears, bearings, shims seals etc. in the steering box to adapt to my '36 Ford pickup.

Thank you,

Bruce Smith from Hughson, California

Bruce-

Basically, you need a '37-'40 complete assembly. It is "possible" to use a '41-'48 assembly but you need to truncate the shaft. There is no way you simply can change the inners of your current box. If you need further details, PM me.

I read with interest this posting. I am about to attempt to rebuild my steering box on my 39 Ford PU and my green book does not show a picture. Carpenters shows one, but doesn't identify which year it is. Could someone post a good picture of the insides of a steering sector for a 39? Any suggestions as to how best for a newbie to attempt this job? Thanks

They are all basically very similar, I think I have several articles on rebuilding them.

Think the same link ended up getting posted twice? The link in #3 of that looks like a good one!

Thanks to JSeery, for the pictures. I have two reasons for dealing with my steering gear box. First is that my steering wheel still will not turn and I want to make sure the problem is not in the gear box. Second, I think after many years, it might be good to replace bearings and bearing cups. Thanks again for the pictures and assistance.

JSeery-

The posting #3 is referring to an article I wrote for V8 Club several years ago. Since then there has been a couple of published revisions made along with additional pictures but basically things are the same.

I found a really nice complete '38 car steering setup at a swap meet, put it in my '36 truck and it steers like power steering, super smooth!

I replaced my 36 column with a 38 column. You have to modify or replace the attachment to the frame. You can use the 36 column tube but you have to move the ignition switch maybe an inch if I remember correctly.
