Default A little trans help...please

OK, I came across a used T-5 for a great price.
I would like to know how well this will work behind my Flathead.
Here's what I have.
1935 5 window coupe
Stock 59A motor
3.00 rear ratio
28" high tires
1st-4.03, 2nd-2.37, 3rd-1.49, 4th-1.00, 5th-0.76
Please let me know if any additional information is needed.
Thanks for your help,
Joe

Find out about the tag codes, shop for a trans with a higher first gear, use the S10 rear housing for shifter location...

With a tall diff ratio like you have and add a .76 t5 to the equation you will only be turning 1788 rpm at 60 mph.

Is this a good thing? How usable would 1st gear be?
Thank you,
Joe

Karl
The code for this trans is 1352-216. (1993 2.2L S-truck) It's the electronic speedo version with the shifter in the right location.
Thank you,
Joe

There are people in here with much more knowledge than me but I just went through this.
I used an older t-5 with mechanical speedo drive so I was able to connect to my speedo. You will not be able to drive your mechanical speedo from your electrical transmission with out an additional component between the two and only if you are running 12vlt. But if you can live without the factory speedo and maybe use GPS then I believe, to answer your original question, you engine and the t-5 I believe can me mated. It's a pleasant upgrade, at least on my 8ba.

My Falcon runs at 1750 rpms at 60 mph, so I dont see that as a problem. However, you may not like that 1st gear. You will have to have an adapter plate, and the crossmember will need to be mofified. A new clutch plate with the correct splines will be needed, and you will need to modify the clutch throwout. Here's some pics of my swap.... not a T5, an F150, but quite similar im many respects and the pics will give you an idea of what's involved. I went with F150 because of the great shifter location.

I'm running 12 volts so I should be ok there, but I think I like the GPS idea better,it sounds nice & inexpensive!!

Looks like you'll have a three speed with a useless gear at each end. Big problem with gearsets intended for modern engines' RPM range. Is it really a bargain? Good Luck: Fred A

Our 32 with t5 has a low 1st gear (4.06 ) but suits OK as it's fairly cammy so enables us to do parades etc with some revs. It launches well but runs out pretty quick before hitting 2nd.
.86 O/D is great as we have 750 x16 rears and 3.54 diff with the O/d converts to 3.0 in 5th.

I have a Hogs head bell housing so I'm going to need an adapter plate. This 1993 trans has a Ford bolt pattern not GM. I read about Dwight Bond. I wonder if his adapters are for a Ford bolt pattern.

Thank you,
Joe

You'll probably never get it in 5th gear with a 3.00 rear end. And if you did you would be reducing that gear to a 2.28 ratio. I doubt your engine has enough torque to work with that ratio. You didn't say what kind of rear end, but if you put in a 3.70 gear or higher you'll like it much better.

It's a Ford 9" Will the 3.70 ratio help 1st gear also?
Thank you,
Joe

A 3.70 rear ratio will make first gear worse. LOTS worse

Knowing that, is there any way for a 5spd to be used effectively in a stock flathead? What's the alternative's??
Thank you,
Joe

GM setup the gear ratios in the T-5 to work with mostly their 4 Cyl engine that had a narrow flat torque curve, and they all had a 3.73 rear gear ratio in those S-10s. So that's what we have to work with. I have a 3.80 gear ratio in my roadster with first gear at 4.03 I can cruise at parade speed in first gear. At a flat stop I start in 2nd.

I was going to use an 11" clutch with the T-5 because that's what was on my '46 flathead.
Will I run into any interference problems with an original style pressure plate with the 11" clutch & a hogshead bell housing?
What's the benefit/fault?
Thank you,
Joe

I seriously doubt you will need an 11 inch clutch. I have a 10 inch in my roadster. I had the 59ab bellhousing with a Offenhauser adapter.

How well it will work will be determined by the type of driving you intend to do. Come up with some parameters on that, then you will know what ratios you need to have.
Here is a URL for a list of what is available.

http://www.britishv8.org/Articles/Bo...T5-ID-Tags.htm

If you go to the sister website of this one called the HAMB,
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=5
and type "T5" in the search you will have so much info that it should keep you reading for at least 3 days.

Most of the parts can be interchanged between these various transmissions. Most people want a good working transmission in their cars so a rebuilt one makes sense. In the rebuild process the ratios you want can be put in, the type of speedo drive you want and several upgrades such as carbon fiber synchros and double tailshaft bushings can be put in.
If you ever drive one with a short throw shifter adapter, you will never use a stock one again also.
