Where are you gentlemen buying springs to rebuild the standard clutch assemblies? I might have access to one of my friends intake / exhaust valve spring raters and I would be interested in knowing if anyone has a rate / height spring pressure for me to go by in determining if existing springs are reuseable.

Hello Ed, that is good information. I will save it and try to look for a local supplier.
I did not think to look in the service bulletins, etc. Any info there???

For V8 there are little shop manuals on sections--engine, driveline ----the driveline one has pressure plate and disc rebuilding specs, the A type of pp was used till 34 or so and is in there.

Unless the low mileage cars I've driven have tired springs, rebuilders are using stiffer springs than Ford used. Personally I'd like to see one or both of the drawings for A-7572 "Clutch Pressure Spring" and work from there.

If I had either of the two drawings I would have provided you with the specs!

We built Model A clutches for years. Been in business since the 1936. A lot of guys liked to take springs out of the pressure plates. They were too strong originally. Contact Brake & Clutch Supply, Waco, TX 254-752-4397 for parts or rebuilding.

The basic Model A type pressure plate was used through 1934 and rebuild is covered in the 1932-47 book "Repair manual--transmissions, clutches, overdrives, and power take-offs, 1932-47"
I believe this is reprinted and available at V8 repro parts places. There are test specs for the springs, and there are B springs which would be same as A, I believe, and BB and one other V8 truck set which are stiffer than that. Quite possibly the springs now used are one of the 2 truck sts..weakest usable B spec is 110 pounds, greatest truck spec is 140 to show the range. |

As a side note, I would still prefer to know the specs used when the cars were in production. They may have retained the same specs in later years but I would prefer to know the details without assumptions.

This is a separate small book, not a bulletin. Specs are a bit odd... for the spring relevant here, the one for the B-7563 pressure plate, spec is given as spring load 110-120 pound-feet. I am not sure how they mean for that to be applied...I would expect to see a length of compression in there, but this seems just a rate. These are test specs for used springs, too, but I would suspect that high number is likely production value.
"test the spring load of each clutch pressure spring with a tension scale", with no further explanation and no illustration of process or tension scale for this or for the later Long plates. |
