Default engine number

my engine number on my 1930 coupe is --AA3026688-- and there is a star on each side of the number. Is this a truck number? Could it be that ford had extra
engines sitting around at end of shift and this got thrown in. Or is it more likely not the right engine for the car? thank you

Engine #3026688 was made on Mar 14, 1930 out of 7027 engines that day.
AA denotes a AA truck.

I'd say somewhere along the line someone installed a truck engine.

is there a reason for the stars at beginning and end of number?

Yes, it makes it more difficult to change the number by simply stamping in one more digit. And there are many number sets out there, but not many stars, so that's another way to identify a restamp, if the stars are missing.

I believe the stars keep less than honest people from adding numbers on the end to change the v.i.n.

We had an armament officer in the military when I was serving who almost did just that, he didn't miss by much.

You can check the number on the frame (not an easy job unless you lift the body) and see if the number matches the engine. I would bet that it is different, but that would have been the same as the original engine number.
