I have a '39 Plym conv cpe which is very similar to the Fords... Briggs Manufacturing built the Ford & Plymouth coupe open car bodies..
Ford used a slightly different pivot assembly on the deck lid, however, the deck lids are basically the same.. I used a Ford rubber seal on my deck lid. Ford mounted their bodies to the chassis in a completely different manner than the Plym's.. From the attached pix you should be able to note that my body had extensive damage that was the result of rust-out in the rumble area and collisions.. I have several detailed pix of the metal restoration that was done on the rumble area floor pan... The rest of the floor pan and rockers in my car were in very good shape. The front quarters were rotted away pretty badly, as was the rear quarter panels. I know a man in Australia that is restoring a '39 Plym conv cpe, I also know a couple of guys in NZ that are restoring '37-40 Chrysler (Plym) convertibles... If you think my photos will help you, let me know, I will copy them and send you copies....Bill

It's the inside floor area above the fuel tank.
I'm pretty sure it is the same as the '39 coupe, but it would be nice to be sure ( re the swages etc ) Thanks, Chris.NZ. |

As a result of a lot of networking with the Plymouth Owners Club (POC) I was able to locate an unmolested '39 Plym conv cpe in Idaho which had been under the same ownership since 1940... The owner was kind enough to let me make templates using large cardboard panels that I sourced from a large warehouse/packing company in Idaho... Yes... they packed potatoes. The tail section was hand fabricated utilizing five separate panels, shaped on an English wheel. welded together and then welded to the body. The original seams were duplicated and leaded over... I currently know a man in Australia that imported a '39 Plym conv cpe from the U.S.... He is using the same procedure we used to repair his tail section and rumble floor..
