I recently purchased a 1931 Ford street rod. There is a gap between the fenders and the hood, about 1". Does anyone know if the 28 and 29 hood shelves fit the 31 fenders? I was hoping if they fit, and not too tall, I could use them to fill this space.
Thanks Bill |

The shape and length are totally different between the two. One inch is quite a bit. How much gap between the body (splash) aprons and the body sill? Do you suppose the body is mounted an inch too tall??

The space between the body and splash apron is right at 1/2". Between the bottom of the radiator shell and top of fender is 1 1/2". The fenders lay flat on the frame rail but the front of the apron is up about 1/8". The frame on this car is aftermarket but has all of the wood blocks supporting the body if that means anything. I do know the body and fenders were removed from the frame for painting.

Radiator and/or shell sounds like they are WAY to high. Hood may be too high in the back also.

Should the front of the body set firmly on the frame, realizing the apron is sandwiched between? i will attempt to attach some photo's if I can figure out how that is done. I am new to this forum.
Thanks Bill |

Ummm Tom, rethink what you are saying. The fron mount on the '31 firewall/cowl sat directly onto the frame with just a thin rubber pad ...and no wood. The 1928/29 used a piece of wood sandwiched between the two pieces of metal.

Bill,
It sounds like the person that built the street rod may have used a 28-29' year frame and mounted the 31' body on it. The front cross members on the early and later frames are different. The early cross members have a raised boss where the radiator mounting bolts go (one each side) and the later 30-31' cross members have a lowered boss to mount the taller 30-31 radiator. Check that first and let us know. Mike |
