Default Growly starter on 36LB???

Finally got my '36 5 window to "test drive" ready. Finished chassis and test ran and broke in motor well over a year ago and it has been sitting while I do the body work. When I test ran it, I started it with 12 volt, but had 6 volt to the ignition. The engine is still tight and now with everything 6 volt the starter really growls and wears the battery down quickly (6 volt Optima). I have a 36 sedan we've been driving for several years so I switched starters, same growl. On the new engine I used a flat flywheel and 11" pressure plate from an 8ba, S10 4 speed tranny and S10 clutch disc. I have three spare "dog dish" flywheels and three flat flywheels and I can't find any difference in measurements with regards to the ring gear. The only thing I can find is that the teeth on the ring gear have the worn "bullet nose" to the front, rather than the rear. Question is, after all that, is an 8ba flywheel compatible with a 21 stud, and if so, could the existing wear on the ring gear teeth be the source of the growl??? Thanks for any ideas and/or suggestions. Rod
