Got this downdraft and want to put in on the new engine. Pictures do not show well but the manifold is a "Scalded Dog". I have been told it is a Srtromberg 81 but the numbers don't bear that out. On the outside the circle has a B and below is 1 1/32. On the inside - below the fuel line is a circle with a B and below that is a 1779.

Anybody out there recognize and identify this?
please don get mad at me for the copper fuel line - temporary.

I would say that it is a Stromberg '48', bigger than an 81 or 97, otherwise the same. But the top is different so it was likely not made for a Ford?

I have manual that has all strombergs, This picture says type B X O??

Not the same Stromberg as the pictured, but just like one I picked up at $5 for a mid thirties Oldsmobile, still not a ford. Lucky the jetting is much like the Stromberg model 40 and 48. Useless for a Ford because the levers are on the wrong side, but there may be a rod or a banger that would find it useful. A real fooler. Good Luck: Fred A

I may be in that category too but the old "I have been told" is often the start of major misinformation. The 81 is different in just about every way other than being a three bolt Stromberg. Another of my favorites is the Holley 92 which is commonly sold to the unwary as a much more pricey Stromberg just because there is an 81 on the body. Oh, well, Good Luck: Fred A

A member pointed out to me with a polite PM that the Holley 92 would be easily confused with the ubiquitous Holley/Ford/Chandler Groves 94 used by ford for nearly twenty years. They are nearly but not the same. That's part of the reason that a crafty seller would try to suck up some of the fame of the venerable 81 applying it to the 92 which is blessed with an 81 mark on the carb body. Each has a place but that Olds-Stromberg is something else. FA
