Default 1928 Fan Shroud attachment question

Hello fellows--

I have a 1928 business coupe with a firewall date of 12-27-28. It did not come with a fan shroud when I got it. I bought a shroud at a swap meet and am now trying to install it. The shroud has four metal tabs for attaching to the radiator. The radiator has two metal "ears" on the vertical sides to which the radiator shall attaches. My shroud goes in at the top and bolts up to the same hole in the top "ear" that the bolt attaching the shell goes into. On the bottom. however, the two shroud tabs stick out and there is nothing to bolt to, as they do not contact the lower ears, and no way I can bend them to make contact.

Were 1928 radiators using the shroud constructed differently in the area of the lower ears? Or was there some kind of an intermediate bracket that bolts to the ear/shell and bolts separately to the tab? The parts books I have do not list any attaching parts and only list one radiator for both 1928 and 1929 cars.

I have also found three different sources that list different dates when the shroud was discontinued--November 1928, January 1929 and March 1929. Which is correct?

Many Thanks,

Chas Seims

I have a 1928 radiator and a 1929 radiator (and cars), and the only difference in the radiator's brackets are the 2 extra holes on the lower radiator brackets. I'll try a search for the pictures I posted a while ago.

The initial 1928 radiator is distinguished by a
rectangular bracket (portion of bracket on top of
the upper tank) for the radiator support rods. In
mid 1928 the bracket for the radiator rods was
changed to a triangular shape extending to the filler
neck. Radiators in 1928 had no head lamp wiring
crossover tabs. The lower side brackets had two
holes on each side for attaching the fan shroud and
the radiator shell.
The upper tank surface had reinforcing ribs which
formed a large “X” on each side of the filler neck.
The lower tank was rectangular shaped with the
exception of the water outlet pipe fitting.
In March 1929, the extra hole in each lower side
bracket for the fan shroud was discontinued.

FAN HOUSING ASSEMBLY (SHROUD)

A fan shroud, dipped in gloss black enamel, was used
from the beginning of production until November
1928 when it was obsoleted. Some vehicles may
have a fan shroud until March 1929 depending
upon the assembly plant and the stock on hand.
After February 1929 a fan shroud was not used.

Many Thanks,

Chas Seims
Hope this helps.
