Default Tilly Carb noise

Tonight I was helping a friend start his engine in his 31 Vicky. It had been running well, but he wanted a bit more power and added a Snyders 5.5 head. We had it running very smoothly, but I kept hearing a crackling and gurgling sound from his Tillitson carburetor. He says it always made that sound. I am used to Zenith carbs and have never heard that noise. I tried adjusting the GAV and the idle screw, but it would die with almost any adjusting. It also was idleing at about 700RPM as measured with a tach. Can anyone tell me if this is normal or what I can do to get rid of the rather loud sound.
