Default Oil Pump Refurbishment

I am restoring the oil pump from my truck's engine and its corroded and kind of rusty on the outside. I have cleaned it up with solvent and a wire wheel on my bench grinder.

When refurbishing them, do you paint them or finish the outside with anything? I want to prevent it from developing surface rust while I work on more of the engine.

Thanks.

Coat it in oil and wrap it in newspaper. That should last until you're ready.

Just curious, what are you doing to the inside? The key to these functioning properly is to have the proper backlash in the two gears, to have the lower plate free of any scoring (which would allow oil to bypass) and for proper bushing to shaft clearance (again, allows oil to bypass thus limiting the speed and volume of oil transfered). A good quality rebuild kit will take care of the first one, either lapping the plate or flipping it over will take care of the second one, but the third really needs to have the bushings installed and then honed with a stone/mandrel long enough to do both of them simultaniously. This is something a local automotive machine shop can handle for you unless you are so equipped to do so in your garage.

Brent,

There is a 4th....the gear to housing clearance. IF the housing is worn from
the gear or scored from trash run threw the pump...it will bypass. What is the
clearance between the housing and the gear...good question? I would think no
more than .002"....maybe .003".
