Default Steering Column Causes Gas Leak

The tank in my late '30 pickup is leaking aroung the steering drop. Got a clean tank that passed a pressure test that I'm painting to replace the leaker. I also have a late '31 style bracket that will take the strain off the tank and wonder if the original bracket on the tank may continue to stress or rattle if left without the rubber. Thinking about trimming that thing off. Thanks Fred A

Years ago before I bought my A, the bottom clamp was cut off when the '31 type was installed. I don't miss it.

I left the tank mount on my Tudor long ago and never had any problems.

My 29 had a leak also, I installed a late 31 bracket and left the old tank mount with no rubber so someone can return it to original in the future if they choose to.

Makes the the tank worth more also if the car or tank gets sold down the road.

A Note for someone chasing a gas leak at the bracket: I re-soldered my bracket several times and it still leaked. I got more additional experience removing and installing the tank than I wanted!

I thought that it was leaking under the bracket where it is riveted and soldered to the tank.

Finally I found 3/8 inch crack in the tank itself about a 1/2 inch away from the bracket under the paint. Drilled an small hole at each end of crack (to stop crack from getting worse) and soldered a small brass patch to the tank.

I would not cut a good original part. Just leave the rubber out and you'll be fine. NEVER use the steering wheel to help enter or exit the car.

A great Idea in theory Tom, but perhaps your As are a little roomier than my pickup or your derriere a bit smaller. I would not be surprised to find that the steering column, as a rigid link with the frame to the tank also transmits an additional stress. The rubber may be too tight. Seems that the late '31 bracket is the standard remedy. Thanks: Fred A

Just remove the tank, clean so there are no fumes and take it to your local radiator shop. They fixed mine for about twenty or thirty bucks. been fine since.

How's this for a fix? A little deteriorated since it was probably first installed but the spring load really does take the load off the support if you don't mind the look?
