Question Ford Vs Chev ?

Hey guy's,,,

Was looking at the latest Hemming's & they did a write up on the 31-32 Chevy's..They "kinda" down played the Model A Vs. the Chev's

I'am thinking the Ford's were a better car,,,such as a bearing where Chev used a "Bushing",,,Stainless part's on the latter A's On and on..

They did say the Chev weak point was the wood framed body's Vs the Ford's mostly steel..

What do you think ?

Where are all of those Chevrolets today?
Chevy out produced Ford in 1931.
I have three '31 Fords and one '30.
It speaks for itself, they didn't hold up. I do have a '30 Chevy Radiator shell in my office, most of the chrome is still on it.

When the war came along (ww2) for you young guys and they started the scrap drives most of the chevys were junked because of bad engines while the As just kept running.

The wood framed bodies killed those cars. I think they were a faster, quicker and more roomy car than the ford when they were new and they did out sell ford but the wood killed them. Once they sat for a bit, the bodies fell apart and then the car was considered junk.

Back in 57,I had a 32 Chev coupe that I put over 10,000 miles on in the 1-1/2 years I had it.The door posts were weak & I had to smear heavy grease on the door sills every so often so that the doors would close easier. After that,I went back to an A.

Yep! friend had '32 Chev, hinge screws, like lag bolts, screwed into WOOD! Drilled, glued in hardwood dowels, still not very good. (sagged)
But they are pretty smooth cars, Pappy, my Uncle, had three '29's a long time ago. He & I went Ca. to Oklahoma in one, did good, lost 1 outer front wheel near Kingman, Ariz. We had to use the old 66 thru Oatman, Ariz. in the Black Mountains, low & second gear switchbacks, and in the WINTER!! Water is trucked in, a loooong time ago paid 10 cents for a glass of water & I don't remember what it cost to fill your radiator!!
Look up Oatman, Ariz. on the net, fun place, even now. OLD mining town w/ donkeys roaming the streets, lots of movies shot there! Bill W. (travel guide) My T-Bird (that's a Ford Too) buddy goes there every year.

Two things: My Dad had a 31 Chev sedan when I was about six. We're driving down the road one day, prob about 40 mph, and a rear axle broke.

Second, Where are the Chevy clubs? It wasn't just the wood bodies. Quite a few A's had wood framed bodies, and they're still around. Chevy's mechanicals didn't last either.

I still say chevy would never have outsold the Model A, if ford had only painted his wheels yellow instead of that pallid cream color.

Greg out West,
Greg out West, I'm sure you're a really nice guy and you've posted on here before so you're an intelligent human being. Therefore I have to ask: Why would you come onto a Ford forum and ask such a question. I'm pretty sure everyone on this site will give you an unbiased answer. Well maybe not everyone. From 1908 to 1953 Everything Ford made put anything that ever was or became a General Motors vehicle to shame. And from 1954 to 1964 Ford wasn't too shabby. I have to admit though there was a time from 1958 till 1954 that GM made some pretty trick stuff. But I wouldn't give you a tinkers damn for a tri-five Chevy and I can't stand anything called a muscle car. And nobody ever made a decent car again until they started putting 302's in Mustangs. And there's a reason Ford keeps dominating with their trucks. i think it goes without saying FORD RULES ABOVE EVERYTHING. Any more questions?

Ok, ok I guess I didn't give a good reasonably thought out answer. I guess I just thought I'd mess around and.. Well it is after 1:00 AM in the morning so forgive me if my answer was kind of well you know... ridiculous.

Instead of the recycle bin I take car magazines to the VA hospital and leave them in the waiting rooms. They are always the first magazines to be picked up and read.

In the mid 70's I saw a mint 1929 Chevy 2 door coach setting beside a house in Cosmos, MN. I asked if it would be for sale, but the guy said no way would he want to sell it. It was just traded in at the local dealership, to buy a new car by some little old lady. I stopped again a year later to ask, as I'd seen it never moved and wasn't covered. This time I saw mushrooms growing from the upholstery and wood. What a waste of a pristine car.

My grandfather told me the reasons the A's survived and the Chevy's didn't were,(1)the wood framed bodies. There were always nice running Chevy's around, with the doors flopping around.(2)During the war you could squeeze 16-20 MPG out of an A,the Chevy was 10-12.Todays gas would do much better.Everybody wanted an A.In 1978 I was driving a 30 Chevy coupe,I could get 16 MPG out of it.The original owner told me the best he did for the first 12 years was 10-12.He parked it during the war and drove a beat up A.That car stayed parked for 35 years until I got my hands on it.It had always been in a dry environment so the wood was perfect.
