Need a little help guy's. Iv'e been piecing the front sub frame together
on my 31 Coupe. Some one had chopped it up pretty badly, and it was also rusted away. I'm ready to weld the last piece in, but am not sure if it is correct. Here's a pic, the arrow points to the space between the to holes. I can't find a pic that shows me the correct relationship between the two pieces. Is there supposed to be that much space between them ? What spacer makes up the space when it's bolted too the frame? Thank's, Rich |

Can you take the same picture, but back away about 4 feet so I can get my "bearings"? Also, whose sub-rail extensions did you buy because something doesn't look right but I cannot get my orientation on what it is just yet.

Here's another pic. It is the lower pass side cowl mount to frame.
The sub rail is original pieced together. Rich |

I dont have a 30-31 pic but this 28-29 cowl is simillar, there is a block of wood that takes up the space.

Thank's for the reply. Yours looks slightly different than my 31.
Mine looks like the bottom firewall ext piece is to low. I haven't got mine on the frame yet, still doing a little work on the rear subrails. Maybe some one has a 30-1 pic? Thank's, Rich |

These 2 closeups are a 30 roadster with an original (well worn) body shim stack. Third pic is my project for a rather "distant" shot that might help. I can email it direct if you want a clearer shot...just shoot me your email Richard.
(Excuse the crappy cowl patches...I cut them off & used Bill Stipe panels) I don't believe the gap between your metal pieces should be there. The 2 pieces actually sandwich together & the round shim-stack under the forward bolt hole rests directly on the car's frame. The subframe terminates a few inches up & behind and of course a wooden block fits up inside the subframe so in fact the cowl is supported on the block and the forward shims. *Please jump in here anybody who understands this area better...but as I gather...the appropriate number of shims are choosen to get the cowl close to verticle on the frame. As the forward bolt is snugged it compresses the shims and tilts the cowl forward...or loosened to tilt backwards for adjustment of hood line and door gap. |

There should be no space between the holes where the #1 body mount bolt goes.

Craig, thank's a lot. I could never get a clear pic, but I thought
there should be no gap also. Please send pics: [email protected] I'm wondering if the firewall ext pieces are correct, they almost look to long. I would think they were all the same for 30-1? Thank's much, Rich |
