can a new gasket, or seal be installed with out taking out the windshield?

Do you mean that you want to crank it out and replace the outer seal? I am not sure about the clearance you would have across the top, if that is what you are proposing to do. If the current seal is old and crusty, you are going to have a heck of a time cleaning out the grooves where the new one will fit into.

that is what i would like to do,there is no seal there at all, it is gone!

Brendan, I just recently put an outer windshield gasket/seal in my '35 fordor. I had to take the windshield completely off and remove the old gasket that had only been on the WS frame of that car a few years. IT was a stiff piece of crap to begin with and was not doing a good job of sealing. I bought a Bob Drake gasket with contoured corners. Pulled the old gasket right out, cleaned up the groove/slot, and installed the new gasket in about 10 minutes using wooden popsicle sticks. I coated the new Drake gasket with baby powder before installing. I did all this on the kitchen table (with the wife's permission of course

) I could never have done it that easily with the windshield mounted in the car.

If the channel that the seal fits in is truly clean count yourself lucky, it is a bitch to clean. It's not easy to get a new seal in either, you will be time ahead to take it out and put it on a table so you can work around it. You run the risk of breaking the glass working the seal in with the windshield in the pickup.
