I got a side shift trans that came with a pile of parts I bought and he thru the trans in,po thought it was a Merc trans. The number on the back of the trans is as follows O1A 7006 and up top where they stamp serial numbers is *I8-579302I* If it turns out to be a 3sp ford or merc can I use the gear cluster in a top loader case?
Thanks Joe |

You can check Mac VanPelt's web sight for the serial numbers. With that number it would be pre-war 221 CID Ford application. Mercury would be 99-XXXXXX on the top of the trans. The gears will interchange with a top shift type but just make sure the input gear tooth count will work for your application. 16/28 is the most common on the passenger cars.
