I have this real nice Offenhauser triple intake I would very much like to put to use. Strombergs fit quite well but I do not want to spend that much cash. I was wondering how much damage is done to the Holley 94 carbs to make them fit. Thanks Bill

Ive found a lot of guys cut the front top screw off of the center and rear carb to make them fit. PLEASE DO NOT take that road it just ruins them for future use.You will most likely get a leak there as their is not enough screws there in the first place. Its not a solution to your problem. Thanks ken ct.

4t,
I've done a bunch of these....As Ken says DO NOT butcher the carbs. I use a Stromberg in the middle and Ford/Holleys on the ends unless I can convince the customer to go Strombergs all the way. Strombergs seem to be coming down in $$$$$ as us horders die off and the kids unload our stashes. Charlie ny |

Thanks for the replys guys, I have 6 Strom. 48's and one 97. As well as a some 94's. I did have a suggestion of putting a riser under the center carb. Would that be a satisfactory way. How would the linkage work???
Thanks Bill |

I've noticed some wedges advertised on the internet bidding site, they would offset the rear and front carbs for this, but I don't know if you could adjust the floats to correct for the angle. I had this same problem, just bought an Edelbrock intake, much cheaper than three Strombergs.

4t,
It might be time for JWL to share info here. Anything is possible but if you've got the Strombergs use them. I'm pretty sure it will be a close situation with or without a riser in the middle. Any time I've used risers the carb/s act like Jekyl and Hyde unless I richen them up. Too edgy when cold. Charlie ny |

Well after going through the suggestions I went to the toy room and got out 2 94's and a 97. Ron's suggestion of a 3/8" spacer is right on but I will have to tilt the center carb just a tad and that should be easy enough.

Well I did some tinkering today and this is the result. Holley in front and rear and stromberg in the center. The stromberg has a spacer 3/8" on the rear and 5/16" on the front. Fits nice with 1/8" or more clearance. I guess now the question would be is this a good viable combination. I want it set up with full progressive linkage. Should the center carb be a 48 or a 97 and how should it be set up. What Holley's are best to use in the front and rear and how should they be set up. ie. jets, power valves etc. The engine it will be going on is a 276, 3-5/16 Ross pistons, merc 4" crank, Manly hi flow valves etc. and a L-100 cam.

I have an issue with he street setup some use. First no one had ever used an A/F meter to set these things up, regardless of what carburetors are used. I've even considered using a vacuum operates secondary operation for the front and rear carbs. At present a very good setup i open the primary carb (Center) full but only open the secondaries 1/2, you don't need all this carburetion on a street engine, just like you don't need Ross pistons and super flow valves. It's just over kill. Spend some time with the combustion chamber and the ignition. When you're done the car will run well and give great economy and long life. FYI At present we're running a 284 Ardun on ONE 97. Works great, would probably go faster if the other two were working tho.

Boomer seeing you have 6 #48's and 1 #97 your not hurting for stroms. Use 3 #48 and jet the 2 end ones down, you would have to do that with the 94's anyhow/ Stromberg rebuild cost about the same as a 94 one. ???????? ken ct.

Just a question. Why would you go to all that trouble when 3 X 2's are such a hassle on a street driven engine? Way back when (1962) I bought a new x-motors Catalina with factory 3 X 2's. When I wasn't at the gas station buying gas I was in my shop trying to keep those x*&%# carbs tuned. Unless you are going for flat-out performance I'll bet you get tired of them quickly unless you are indeed going racing or building a show car. They do look neat!

4t,
I hope Uncle Max joins in here. Strombergs are real fussy about float level....I WOULD NOT tip that carb. You will be much better off , if you insist on the 94's on the ends, taking a rat tail file ( or an end mill if you have access ) and elongate the 3 mounting holes in the offending 94 and then use a flat 1/4-3/8" spacer to gain what else you need under the Stromberg. Strombergs like 15/32 from the top of the bowl to the fuel level.... I personally set float level aka fuel level with the carb on my running test motor with 2-3 psi at the pump. You'd be surprised what 1/16 difference means in overall happy Strombergs. Just as an aside I've built at least 3 mixed setups as you are proposing and never had to do anything more than a light filing on the nose of the rear carb. Anyhoo, just my 2 cents. Charlie ny |

shoot, Bill....run 2 48s and the 97....then you don't have to mess with spacers, etc....and the linkage would probably be easier, also....good luck....looking pretty....Mike
