it starts when i prime the engine ..then it shuts off. if i prime it runs again then shuts down. new fuel pump installed less than a month ago new fuel line from pump to carb . steel line from tank to wall clear blew air through. then took flex line of wall put rubber line to different tank car ran fine . bad flex line? maybe gas below pick up in tank?

ideas???

The pickup in the tank may have broke off or clogged

if i blow air through lines i hear it bubble in the tank.

You can still hear air in the tank if the pick up is broken off. Take the fuel line off at the pump and make up a line from the pump to the filler neck down into the tank. That will tell you in a hurry if the pickup is broken.

If I remember correctly the 39 I did had a flew hose a little before the pump, just disconnect the hose and lower it below the tank. If your pickups good and the lines clear your gona flow fuel be ready to catch it

has it run with the new f/p at all??....could be flex line...could be f/p...glass bowl f/p??.....if you dribble gas down carb and get it running with all the fuel lines hooked up, you'll be able to see if f/p is working....hopefully....guess you could try to suck fuel from tank thru the fuel line, but gas tastes horrible....good luck.....Mike

Disconnect the line from the pump to the carb. Attach a hose that you can then terminate in a can. Crank the engine and see how much fuel you are pumping. Be careful.

it does not pump from car tank but the same pump will pump from a gas can. the pump is glass bowl and is about a month old. did run for short time with new pump then does as it is doing now. runs all day if hooked to gas can.

I had a similar problem when I bought my 38 Coupe, would not run from the tank but ran fine from a 3 gallon gas can.

In my case, the prior owner had sloshed a sealer in the gas tank, but the sealer was coming off in chunks and intermittently blocking the fuel pick up in the tank.

I replaced the tank and it runs fine now, just like it did off the 3 gallon gas can.

You can thank ethanol for all the problems we're having with the fuel systems on our early Fords!
So far I've had to do a fuel pump, a carburetor, fuel lines and send my tank out because the ethanol eat up the sealing compound the was in the tank.

We had a simple way of testing the tank in my 32. Basically we pulled the line off the fuel pump and using rags to help with a seal, we shot air through the filler neck into the tank, slightly pressurizing it. This put the pressure the way the gas wants to go. if you have sealer or crud up against the pickup, blowing back through the line moves it out of the way, but it just settles right back over the pickup again. you need someone in the front to catch the gas if it comes out.

i hate to say it , but, it seems obvious that problem is within tank. looks like you have to pull it. i think jim1932 is on the money. there is crud in tank blocking flow.

OK but i did find my flex hose is week..maybe just that the hose is not sealing .

Try replacing the hose with 5/16 fuel injection hose and a couple clamps. If that doesnt help, it may be time to pull the tank. A job I dont envy.

Thats what I did was replace with injection hose which is more ethanol resistant along with a new tank because I did not trust it.

well...i think with all the time i have worked on cars i would think not to trust the fuel gauge....my tank has no gas

i guess we all can learn from this one. once again "tanks" a lot to everyone .
