Hi,
I was checking out a Model A engine for a friend, and I noticed the green paint was chipping away on the engine and bell housing, leaving a bright orange paint color beneath on each. The engine number is unreadable and there are no unusual markings on the head. Might this indicate it was once a power tool engine, or just someone's idea of an undercoat? Thanks. |

The rebuilders used to paint them any color they liked. The Sears nearest me used a rebuilder that painted them silver.I have one that was painted a bright green by the rebuilder over 50 years ago.Another rebuilder on the seacoast painted them all red. And,the shop owner I worked for in high school painted them with whatever he had around. He did a lot of work for a truck dealer,so a lot of A engines got Cummins beige coloring.

OMG
![]() Do you realize what you have there? That was Fords experimental engine. I found information on the Internet, I think it was Wikipedia, that said there was an interview with an ex Ford employee that had his family's life threatened if he reveled that there was a secret group of metallurgists that added meteors to the cast iron to give it extra strength. This special mix allowed unlimited wear life and top end to the engine and the cast parts made from it. ![]()

Maybe it was a CALTRANS engine, like a gen. or compressor.

In 63-64 while in high school, I worked for a chevy dealership and the chevy "Orange" engine paint was priced right, therefore all my Model As at that time had orange engines and transmissions.
