Adding 600w oil to the steering box

I just filled up my transmission and was thinking of doing the same to the steering box, but I don't see where I would add it in. Does anyone have a diagram? Transmission was easy, had the plug, don't see anything similar on the steering.

Franchise, On the 2 tooth box there is a square headed plug ontop of the steering box. Filler to the top and put the plug in. It can take a few tries because it keeps bubbling and blooping for a bit as the air comes out.

Be forewarned yours may very well leak into the light switch. I would recommend using one of the modified steering box end plates from the one of the many distributors. It has a long tube that goes up into the box to prevent oil from leaking into the switch.

I have zero experience with the 7? tooth box.

Mr. Tube is right about the location on the 2 tooth. And as a note, be sure to get that done because I just took mine appart and found damage where it had been run dry and that is just not fun, they are also proud of those selector gears.

Your fill plug may look like a large Alamite grease fitting. A lot of them were like that and a lot of people filled them with grease (BIG MISTAKE!) because of the grease fitting plug.

I should be looking under the hood correct? Where the column comes down? It looks like a grease fitting? Do I just pop that off somehow?

The shock oil I ordered came in a plastic squeeze bottle with a tapered end and cap, like a small funnel. I removed the grease fitting and took the top from this bottle and used it as a funnel, filling it with the 600w oil and watching it slowly ooze into the steering box. It took about 10 or 15 minutes, but I finally filled it to the top. The oil flows about as fast as honey, so it takes a while.

A turkey baster works good to fill it. My wife bought me one so I wouldn't use hers LOL.

It also helps to pour the oil when the oil is warm.
Here in Minneapolis it is 91 degrees today, so pouring the 600W oil is easier to top off my transmission oil.

Franchise, The greas fitting on the 2 tooth (or 7 tooth for tht matter) is a 7/16" box end wrench fitting. I keep a small squeeze pump oil can full of the 600W oil just for the purpose of "pumping" it into the steering box. Stick the nozzle in the hole sand pump away - til it overflows - then screw plug back in. ken

Franchise, yes you do open the drivers side of the hood and just follow the steering column..
At the end of the column is the steering box and you'll see a plug or grease fitting on the top of the box.. You have to unscrew the plug or fitting and pour in the oil.. It only holds a couple ounces, but, fill it up anyway.. It'll leak out but won't hurt anything..

I see remarks here about 600w oil flowing like honey & is easier to pour when warm. The 600w oil I have (from Snyder's) is not thick. It pours like straight 30w. Have I been using the wrong stuff? Have used it in the trans, diff & the steering box.

Ok, I found it. Thanks to everyone for their responses. I'm going on a club meet tomorrow so I will not have time to mess with it tonight. Incidently someone mentioned that it could leak out by the lightswitch inside the car. What is that all about? Definately wouldn't want that to happen!!

Not really. The true weight of the 600w is thick. Vendors have a mix they use of gear oil and STP that seems to also work and is cheaper.

I think Mac's sells both the "new" 600w and the "old" 600w. (600W is a type of oil that Mobil sells, not a weight of oil. The name is now used like Kleenex instead of facial tissue)

It won't leak inside the car.. The light switch is on the steering box, so, if it leaks it will just leak onto the side engine pan, run off the rear and leave a nice little slippery spot on the garage floor..

I've installed Pennrite Steering Box Lube available from Restoration Supply Company. My box was leaking badly and this stuff is super thick. NO LEAKS< steering smooth. Do a search here, there were several posts about it. JMO

I was considering purchasing the Pennrite steering box lube for my car. After reading your comment, I think I'll go ahead and buy the stuff. My steering box leaks, like so many others. It's worth a try.

I have been using straight STP for years, in my cars steering boxes, with no problems.

Mine had a grease-fitting too.
Screwed it out, took out the the grease i could
reach and filled in W600. Using a pumping device
for liquid-soap. Works perfect.
Very little leaking so far.
