I've installed one of these in my early 1930 coupe because I believe it was what was there originally but also because I found the glass bulb type troublesome when it came to obtaining a leakproof seal. Can someone point out the maintenance for one of these? I cannot find anything in print about them. I'm assuming that the x shaped handle on the bottom is for clean out purposes........how offen? When?

Id have to guess this is the benefit of the glass bowl. You clean it out when you see build up.
How often you clean it depends on your tank and fuel source. |

Leo,
Depending on whether you have a screen on your tank shutoff valve, I'd do it about once a month since you are right about it being a cleanout/drain. How about rust in your tank? My opinion. Pete |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Start by making sure the inside is clean. I picked this one up at a swap meet. The brass screen was missing and the inside was full of rust. Most of that rust came from the gas tank, rather than the inside of the bowl. After sandblasting, if I remember right, I used Aero Gloss Jet Black #63 to paint it. In the last picture I don't show the drain cock, spring, and lock washer for the large nut, but they are all left natural finish. My 28 has a very clean tank, but I still open the drain once or twice a year and let a couple spoonfulls of gas run into a clean jar to check for water. I also open it and drain some in a jar if my motorbike needs gas and the gas can is empty. |

I clean mine whenever the car starves for gas at 65, or I need some gas for the lawnmower.
the dirt collects on the other side of the screen from the drain (drain is on the clean side of the screen) --- I don't bother with opening the drain, I just take it apart, then turn on the gas to flush it out, if I am alone I will hang a can with wire under it. The filter is washed off in the running gas. Then I stick an old cotton sock in a funnel ( the lawnmower sock) and pour the nasty gas in the funnel dirt and all. The lawnmower sock is also used to remove water from the lawnmower gas tank ---I stuff it in with a stick, when I pull it out it has sucked up the water. |
