The seal is for a 32 coupe. The rope kit I got (do not remember where I got it) when I squeezed it down on to the front timing cover using a socket and then installing cover on engine it does not seems to be putting much pressure on the pulley. I think it will leak. I think I need a better quality seal. Appreciate any help on your thoughts.

I had zero leakage with the rope seal.I had a lip seal before and it leaked due to not being designed for the application. it was also a pain as you could not pull the front cover without dropping the pan.

I've never had a problem with a front rope seal either. I did have a slight leakage problem with a rear rope seal once after I pulled the pan on a fresh rebuild to replace an inferior aftermarket oil pump.
EDIT : I forgot to mention that I am partial to Fel-Pro gaskets, mainly because of availavility and overall quality, but also because they supply detailed instructions along with a guide and razor knife to install the rope seals. Last edited by tubman; 06-02-2025 at 03:18 PM. |

Let me ask you a question if I may. All the instructions said was to use a socket about the size of the crank and roll the seal in placed. Do not trim ends. I think I rolled it too much. It looks like it is not making a snug contact with pulley shaft because plate went on to easy. One site said to soak in oil over night. Did you do yours that way. I purchased it from Bratton's. It was cheap.

Yes, I soaked it overnight. I just put it in the recesses and trimmed the ends so it stood up some.

The one I got recently that was part of the Best gasket kit did not seem to made of traditional cotton rope, but some other type of "higher tech" material. It was blackish grey in color and seemed to me be a little more malleable. Maybe graphite impregnated?

Soak the rope seal in motor oil at least overnight and do not trim. It is supposed to be a tight fit.
