Outside Mirror

I am looking for an outside mirror to use on my 31 Standard Roadster. All I see advertised are the ones that mount in the pre-drilled holes in Deluxe Roadster stanchions or the ones that mount on the side mounted spare tires, which I don't have. Am I going to have to drill and tap my stanchions? What do you guys use or are there no Standard Roadsters left any more?

I put a couple of those stick on mirrors on my windwings. Better than nothing.

If your lower stanchions attach to the body using screws that are 5/16-24 (not 5/16-18), you could install this in place of one of them.

If the screws are 5/16-18 or something else, potentially you could take this one and machine down the existing post and tap it for what you need. I realize that's a bigger job.

Don't they all have the screws that hold the stanchion to the dash....I don't know...I attached my mirrors as shown in the attached photos.

My standard stanchions that I bought on this swap meet section years ago, had a hole drilled and tapped in the left side stanchion. Use it to mount my mirror.

On my Phaeton, I made a fitting that attaches to the place where the windscreen pivots. I mounted a couple of motor cycle mirrors on them and have used them that way for about 15 years. No drilling anything on the car, no modifying. Easy.

I think I will go this route. Where is the hole located (how far up from the wingnut) and does this location work out alright for you? Given the choice, would you locate it higher or lower? Thanks

Get in the car and hold the mirror at the best height for you and mark it. I had to drill the passenger side stanchion on my deluxe and it works fine.

Here are a couple little safety tips.

I have two outside mirrors on the driver's side. The lower one is aimed at the driver's side rear fender. I use that when backing into my garage and backing into parking spots.

The other mirror on the driver's side is aimed at my blind spot and the outside mirror on the passenger side is aimed at the other blind spot. The inside mirror is aimed to the center rear. That way I have all views covered and don't have to turn my head to check the blind spots. This arrangement has saved my ass more than once.

Hi Fundytides, mine measures 6.5" center to center. I used a jam on the post to lock it in place. The height seems to work OK for me, I'm 5'10" tall. You can do what #12 suggested if you need to drill a hole.

Just an update in case anyone else is doing this. I completed the mirror installation yesterday by drilling and taping the original standard stanchion. The drill chart that came with my chain store tap and die set, said to use a 3/8" drill for my 7/16"-20 mirror post. After doing that, I tried to tap the hole with no success. The tap just wouldn't start. I called a machinist friend of mine and he said I would probably need a better quality tap (which he has). I took the stanchion to him and he had difficulty starting his tap as well. He checked his drill chart and it called for a 25/64" drill for the 3/8"-20 tap. After using this drill, the tap started and the job was successful. Two lessons learned-use good quality tools and make sure you have the right info. The chain store tap and the drill reference may have worked on softer metal but not on the stainless used by Henry. Apparently there were many areas where he did not sacrifice quality.
