I am trying to find out the date for the pictured cap. I read the judging standards to say from beginning of production to December 1928. Any other comments?
It has number cast A-4517-B2

My Canada built 29 special coupe has that type of housings. Built March 29.

Pg 4-15 of the 2011 Standards show it is Nov 1928-March 1929.

Equal = 2 3/4" each Unequal = starting at Lug: 3", 2 1/2", 2 3/4", 2 3/4", 2 1/2", 3" =>No brake arm extensions. (type 3, type 4, type 5) => Unable to see zerk location. Zerk on side (3 o'clock) (type 1, type 2) Zerk at 4 or 8 o'cloclk (type 3, type 4, or type 5) => Lug is rounded not square and has no rib (Type 2, type 3, type 4) => Cannot see if there is a lower boss T boss = type 1 D boss = type 2 No Boss = Type 3, type 4, or type 5 => Flange thickness Thick Flange 5/16" = (Type 3, type 4, or type 5) Thin Flange 1/4" = (type 1 or type 2) Based on the pics (I cannot see the lower boss location, zerk location, thickness of flange) without extension arms means type 4 or 5. Rounded Lug is 2, 3, or 4. Thant means it is likely type 4. If holes are equally spaced 2 3/4" apart and there is no lower boss and the zerk is toward the 6 o'clock position and the flanges are 5/16"... you have a type 4 u joint housing That means for a TYPE 4 U-Joint Housing assembly, you have a: Style 4 U-Joint House Cap: A-4520-C Style 4 Upper Housing: A-4514-B2 Style 4 Lower Housing: A-4514-B2 The Inner housing Cap will be a Style 3 A-4513-A note well that "type" and "style" are not interchangeable Diastole in the Smokies

Is the number on both pieces? Hole numbers start where? On the car bottom most hole is what number, and then moving CW, or CCW????
In the end, does it really matter which one I may have? |

In practicality all that really matters is the spacing of the flange bolt holes. This changes which inner cap is used. Because, the inner cap bolts between the outer housings. There are two Styles of inner caps, One with extra lubrication holes and the other without. The spacing distances start at the frame lug on the upper housing and proceeds either clockwise or anti-clockwise, the direction matters not. It is a palindrome.
