I has shaved of my build up on many parts I bought, as when I first started this a friday evning Jan -22 when I saw this 3W coupe, so it was Adurn, Scintilla, Halibrands solids and QC etc and parts I saw was needed for a cool car.
It was after Cowid and I had a new 426 Hemi to my -70 Cuda, but raced since the 80’s it was time maybe build that hotrod. At start of this ideas I had no clue really and needed ask questions as I still do. I never find a 3W body ( as I had hurry… ) so I bought a frame and came over the 5W I has now. Before I bought the Solids I was actually into Ford steel 16” and found 2 front 4” perfect wheels with nice rims, no pittings and they was only 10 minutes from me. One at Hamb fooled me on a 16 x 5 wheel and sended me 15 x 5.5 but I found one 16 x 5 in Germany, a perfect wheel and seller thought it's been a spare. I thought it was the same as the 4 or 5 inch but this had the unusual ’vulcano’ nut as I think is Merc 41 wheels ( not shore ) Since then I did try get one more. One I meet at LARS from Long Beach dealed wheels since the 60’s said, 'I has them down at shop', so after swapmeet I went there. But he had no one and I showed him the picture and he said they is really unusual/rare. On a movie on YT on a 3W in Santa Monica had a Okie axle so that's why I went to LARS as I located up one axle in LA, but on that car he said it was the vulcano nut wheels. See 14 min in video but he mix it up ( I think what they came from ) But before this or under this story I found a set Solids and bought them. Really nice set but painted and my idea was has them black. But as the car envole in it's style ; 'the less is better' and more hard core race stuff just before NHRA started at 1951, so I got back to the steel wheels. I can't find another Merc wheel ( I will if I serach ) -But now to a question. On this coupe I has many Lincoln parts as 39 transmission, LZ carbs, 41 brakes and also a Kurten/LZ V12 distributor ( but I might use a Kong Jackson as I bought one ) At LARS I meet a guy that had some Lincoln parts and I asked now if he had 2 rear wheels 16 x 5, as he had. Also hard to find and he ait cheap on them… They has not the vulcano nuts and plates to hold hubcaps. Pretty cool but thread question is ; what do you guys think is the coolest wheels of this 2 ? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=O9Pf9ewWZJY Last edited by 3W Hank; 10-29-2024 at 03:07 PM. |

In the 80's or so Ford F150s had 17" rims that take the '40 style hub caps ! Easy to find and can use modern radials. My 66 F 100 had those 16's new. Newc

I should mention I use parts before 1950 ( and on this car radials is a big no no :- ))
But if the one wheel I has is the same as Ford used on 1/2 ton trucks to 66 I can use that, but this wheels 16” x 5” and 5 x 5.5” whit the vulcano nut its not that easy. Then the question was if I would use Lincolns rear, how was the ’factor’ against this wheel I has and search one more. Last edited by 3W Hank; 10-27-2024 at 01:20 AM. |

This is the 1 year only 1941 Lincoln wheel, 16” x 5” x 5.5” x 5.
If I has it corret the ’vulcano’ nut I has 1 wheel, is Merc 1941 ( 1 year only ) |

Note the vulcano nut on the KH/Ford or Merc 41 wheel ( as far as I come in my reseach its a one year only )
The Lincolns same year also at 5" but see the plate to hub caps. Lincoln 39-40 had a 4" wheel and 42 it become 15" rims. Question, is what has the best 'factor' on a Hot-Rod. |

No inputs on Merc or Lincoln on whats the coolest ’factor’, but I think I has bought set Lincolns 5” wide 1941 today in std patina.

here's my 34 jalopy. No parts newer than about 1950 as you wish, except...can you spot the 5x16 pickup wheels on the back? The answer is no, and nobody else would either unless I told them.

Good info, but I'm amazed the guy deal with wheels since the 60's in Long Beach did not know that.
I showed him my picture and he said that is rare, very rare and Mercury 1941 ( one year only ) All I seen I think had been 16 x 4 and no vulcano, but I'll seen 4" wide vucano just some weeks ago. So it must been allot on the market if pick-ups to 1966 and 5" wide. -Anyway, thats one way to go Lincoln as then its the 16 x 5 with plates with rivets... |

It may have been an option as 15" was the trend in that era. They are a bit heavier than the 4.5 inchers.

I noticed Wheel Smith offers "steelies" up to 18" in aluminum in their catalog with no price. I'm really curious how much they are, but you know the deal. If you have to ask, you can't afford it.
On Instagram, they just posted today that they are taking orders on 18" raw steel "steelies". They are $305 a piece. Another $65 if you want them powder coated Last edited by Tim Ayers; 10-29-2024 at 05:05 PM. |

Also, think phone company, railroad, county and state vehicles etc, those places like the bigger wheels. I had 6 or 8 of the lincoln/merc wheels on my auction last year and they did not bring any more money than plain ford wheels.

I guess I become a fool then to tell how much this cost..
If ANYONE has a set nice pair of the Lincoln = get back I pay good, more than Ford 16 x 4. I also take care of freights. Or if anyone has 1 Merc 41 wheel I'm also intrested. I been advertise here an HAMB on wanted, but I had one call back but rims not nice and pitted and not cheap ( Merc 41 style ) As I'm new into this I think in Sweden they cant be many but it's been allot of import parts in decades. Maybe I’m one of few think this has any imporstance soon in 2025 :- )) Last edited by 3W Hank; 10-29-2024 at 06:06 PM. |

It must been for added strange to wheel ( my guess as cars got more heavy )
See #4 in the pictures and you see a Merc 41 wheel ( aka ’volcano’ nut ) and compare to the Lincoln 41 wheel on picture that has the same design as the std Ford wheels has. Now some Ford wheels has the volcano beside 1941, but my guess most look as the Lincoln. Ex my Ford 16 x 4 look as the Lincoln. But if one like to has a 5” wide 16” wheel its either Merc or Lincoln ( 1941 only ) This is why it’s a hotrod wheel and as 1 year only it’s not that easy find them 2024 ( and can be expensive ) Shore, as any deal it’s what seller/buyer agree on and maybe no one even care. But I do.. I has Halibrand Solids, but the cool factor in the style I like it, they can’t compete with 41 Merc, but I has 1 wheel ( can’t find a second ) but Lincoln might be cooler, as just the ’name’ and the plates to hubcaps. I has bought a pair of Lincoln 1941 wheels now and front brakes Lincoln 1941. I had a set of juice early Ford brakes but sold them when I found the Lincoln 42. But Lincoln has 3 design, 39-40 its very deep for spindle but a 32-34 spindle works, then then the 41 is flat like the Ford 39-41 and 39 spindle works, then the 42-47 is ’semi deep”, all rears is the same 39-47. One can use a rear backing plate ( to look like the 41 fronts ) if one weld up the hole for parking brake wire, but they is hard to find to. So I sold my 42 front Lincoln brakes, found a set of the C4 backing plates and found 41 Lincoln drums. But the. C4 is 60’s style ( sold them ) and try to find the front 41 Lincoln. Now I found a set plus the wheels, but had to pay top dollars, but will sell my Soild set wheels. But I feel great get this parts now. Funny, all my really cool hotrod parts is get sold and I get back to Henry or traditional style parts. Last edited by 3W Hank; 10-31-2024 at 08:43 AM. |
