Morning…….

Looking to replace the rear drums on my ‘40 and was wondering if it’s wish to use the old hubs with the new drums. I understand they are pressed into the drums !!

Depends on which new drums you are talking about. Boling Bros make excellent US-made drums that are designed to SLIP on stock or replacement stock-style hubs. Only change is you need to remove the stock studs and install slightly oversized knurled studs. They sell all the parts you need.

If going this route, then yes you can reuse your stock '40 hubs.

Mike: Make your life easy and buy the Boling Bros. hubs and matching drums and grease seals. See photos below. Goes together nice and easy. Contact Gary (Krylon) and you will get all the info. you need from him. Be sure to ask him about reusing your OEM bearings instead of the Boling Bros. bearings as I have heard that the aftermarket bearings are not very good. I used the OEM bearings when I bought my Boling Bros drums and kit from Gary back in 1999. Excellent vendor with an excellent product. Do not discard your OEM bearings.

Last I heard Boling Brothers had a pause on making new hubs. If your original hubs are in good shape, they are the best route. Just drill/knock out your old studs and drums and use modern studs with new slip on drums.

The studs I use are Dorman 610-289. They will install directly into your hubs without enlarging any holes.

Old hubs will work with new drums but you MUST find someone that knows what they are doing to install them. DO NOT settle for someone that thinks they can do it and has a large hammer. It requires knowledge and a large press. Inquire at local clubs and see who does it.
